Excerpt from a letter sent by Zofia Rydet to Jerzy Busza, undated
My Record is not absolutely reportage. It is consciously—if I can put it that way—posed, though I would also deny this, because having a person look straight into the camera is not a pose. I do not act as a director, I don’t arrange the objects or the people; it is they, through sensing the presence of the camera and the lens, who try to be as dignified and beautiful as they can. They are their own directors, and this gives all the photographs their sole stricture, making them humanist images of the equality of people.
